Basic Function

LyondellBasell is searching for Instrument and Controls Specialists for the new Louisiana Integrated Polymers (LIP) Joint Venture Olefins and Derivatives Plant located in Lake Charles, LA. This position will be assigned to support the overall Instrument and Controls Maintenance and Reliability effort of the new Ethylene, Utilities and Offsites, LDPE and LLDPE Units.


Roles & Responsibilities

• Practice, participate and support the plant's health, safety and environmental policies, procedures, regulations, and processes to create and maintain a clean, orderly, safe, and healthy work environment.
• Conform to plant safety and environmental requirements, accepting the responsibility for personal safety. The Instrument and Controls Specialist must know the process hazards and mechanical hazards of their assigned area and what safety equipment is required.
• Continuously improve by staying informed and educated on current safety, technical, and quality practices.
• Provide attention to detail and dedication to work in order to ensure reliability, quality and safe operations of the facility.
• Operate motor vehicle; pick up, scooter, van, aerial work platform, bucket truck and forklift in order to reach, move, work, and transport materials or people to and from work site.
• Receive training and be able to retrieve OSHA information such as PSM, MSDS, hazardous material lists, safety procedures, corporate standards, etc.
• Perform tasks varying from a range of simple calibration and installations, commissioning and de-commissioning of instrumentation to detailed DCS/AMS/PLC troubleshooting, commissioning and de-commissioning.
• Understand the process of the assigned unit or units and be able communicate that knowledge accordingly.
• Possess ability to identify issues and problems not only related to instrumentation but also mechanical or process abnormalities and able to assist in providing solutions or appropriate alternatives.
• Lead in the testing of complex Instrumentation systems and assure complete and proper documentation.
• Provide technical assistance to production and engineering groups on application of new and modification of existing process instrumentation.
• Must be able to oversee several teams/groups of Technicians in the field to assure proper work methods and compliance during turnarounds or other projects when needed.
• Be able to write, test, implement and explain instrument testing procedures.
• Closely communicate and work with Operations and Engineering on a daily basis.
• Must be willing to fill in or act as Supervision in certain situations.
• Must be capable of assisting Planning when needed.
• Must be willing to be a mentor to maintenance technicians and do so in a positive and effective manner for the purpose of growth and promotion.
• Maintains control over Reliability procedures, documenting the management of the configuration data base for the AMS systems.
• Reviews the adequacy of all field hardware changes to instrumentation and its configuration as part of the MOC process.
• Generates notifications to Maintenance for failing devices as identified with AMS and bad actor tracing.
• Frequently reports the health and performance of all instrumentation being monitored through the AMS system.
• Analyzes the results of all alerts and compares to repair records to develop trends of instrumentation performance.
• Participates and/or facilitates in asset criticality analysis.
• Setting up Instrumentation maintenance strategies.
• Participate in /Perform Root Cause Failure analysis.
• Identify and specify I&C Spare parts required to ensure safe and reliable operation.

  • Relevant Technical Certificate in Instrumentation with 10+ years' Instrument and Controls system work experience
  • Or Relevant Associate's Degree or Engineering Degree with 6+ years of Instrument and Controls systems work experience (preferred)
