Employment LPN/ CMA - Dr. Rudd (General Surgery) This position is: Full Time Position Location: Lake Charles, LA GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Responsible for providing professional nursing care for patients following established standards and practices. Assists physicians in coordinating patient care. Functions as primary liaison between patients, staff and physicians. SUPERVISION REQUIRED: Reports to assigned manager or physician SUPERVISION EXERCISED: This position does not supervise any employees. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Escorts patient to exam rooms, weighs patients, takes blood pressure, and prepares patients for exam by physician. 2. Assists physician with exam and special procedures. 3. Makes, receives and handles medically related phone calls as directed by physicians (RX's, hospital admissions, patients, and other physicians). 4. Keeps exam rooms and doctors' offices clean, and maintain necessary supplies. 5. Assists physician in preparing charge tickets, document fees, procedure codes, diagnosis codes and other items as necessary. 6. Counsels and reassures apprehensive patients, assisting them with all clinic routines. 7. Performs a variety of medically related tasks as directed by the physician and particularly to his specialization. 8. Assists receptionist in scheduling appointments as needed. 9. Make sure that all exam and special procedure rooms have biohazard and non-biohazard containers. 10. Assures that all sharps are disposed of in a Sharp Container. 11. Educates patients in self-administration of medication, when appropriate. 12. Schedules CT scans, MRI test, thyroid test, EEGs and mammograms. 13. Follows Clinic policies for infection control in handling and disposing of infectious/hazardous waste materials. 14. Ensures that patient chart entries are made accurately and in a timely manner; forwards charts as appropriate. 15. Notifies patients of test results; schedules follow-up appointments as appropriate. 16. Maintains patient confidentiality. 17. Responds to a "CODE BLUE." 18. Screens pharmaceutical representatives. 19. Performs other task as assigned. 20. May require assisting physician with weekend rounds at area hospitals. 21. May require starting IV's, doing IV pushes. 22. May require mixing medications such as cytotoxic drugs. 23. May require drawing blood and administer drug screens. 24. Observes records and reports patient's condition and reaction to drugs and treatments to physicians. Dispenses medication as directed. Educates patient/family about diagnosis procedures, medications, nutrition, and maintenance of health and wellness. 25. Ensures appointment preferences are given to patients in emergency situations. Greets patients and prepares them for physician examination. Screens patients for appropriation information. Instructs patient in collection of samples and tests. 26. May require pulling and filing charts. 27. Perform other tasks as assigned. SKILLS: 1. Dependability 2. Communication skills 3. Ability to work flexible hours. 4. Customer service skills Requirements: SKILLS REQUIRED:Language Skills - The ability to communicate effectively with others in the healthcare team.1. Understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, diagnostic procedures, pharmacology, and treatment assessments to the extent required to understand and accurately transcribe dictated reports. Translate medical abbreviations into their expanded forms. 2. Computer Skills - To perform this job successfully, an individual should be able to learn and use all functions of electronic medical record software. Must accurately enter data into a database, search for information, send and receive email and attachments. 3. Skills in applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care. ABILITIES: 1. Must be able to communicate effectively in written and verbal form, answer frequent telephone calls. 2. Must be able to work as a team player. 3. Must be able to work flexible hours. 4. Must be able to multi-task. Frequent interruptions require being able to handle a fast-paced work environment during entire time at work. 5. Must be able to prioritize multiple projects. 6. Must maintain strict confidentiality and exercise professionalism when interacting with staff, managers, supervisors, physicians, external customers, etc. Must comply with HIPPA confidentiality standards when accessing or communicating patient information. 7. Ability to relate to people and different situations with good judgment and integrity under stressful situations. PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: Requires continuous standing, bending, stretching, sitting, walking and stooping while on duty. May be required to lift 50-100 pounds. There might be a possible exposure to Hazardous Materials/conditions and infectious diseases.
